Modismos y jerga

Idioms & slang vary from place to place.  Here are some I remember from Ecuador/Cuba/Mexico/Spain:

Quito, Ecuador (2001)

• Tomar el pelo (to pull one's leg):  ¿Me estás tomando el pelo amigo?

• Un trago (a drink):  Tomaremos un trago en ese bar.

• Qué porquería/qué asco (how gross/nasty):  ¡Qué asco este hombre que te trata como perra!

• Tener ganas (have the desire):  No tengo ganas de ver esta película.  Me parece una porquería.

• Ponerse pilas (get energized):  ¡Ponte pilas Effies!  Vamos a divertirnos hoy noche.

• Bestia (great, crazy thing, also can have negative connotation), bacán/chevere (cool):  ¡Qué bestia este maldito tráfico!  Es una bestia este vestido que llevas... es super bacán.  Qué chevere, me gusta muchísimo esta tienda.

• Guagua (baby in Ecuador [from Quechua], bus in Cuba):  Vamos en guagua hasta la playa.
