Vowel Movements

For pronunciation purposes in Spanish, there are TWO letters that change to keep vowel sounds clear & non-repetitive:

1)  Letter 'Y' (meaning 'and' in English) becomes an 'E' when it goes before a word that starts with an 'I' or 'HI' (because the letter 'H' in Spanish is always silent).  For example: 

• La maestra dijo que la respuesta fue extraño e incorrecto.
• Toda la familia del presidente vino a la celebración incluyendo sus hijos e hijas de cinco madres diferentes.
• Vendemos productos de limpieza e higiene.

2) Letter 'O' (meaning 'or' in English) becomes a 'U' when it goes before a word that starts with an 'O' or 'HO.'  For example:

• ¿Vives en la parte este u oeste de la ciudad?
• Nosotros no recordamos si la fiesta fue ayer u hoy.
